Car Finance Settlement Figures: What They Are and How They Work

The figure to clear an agreement early is not simply the payments you have left. Here is what goes into it and how to check one.

You want to change the car, or sell it, or simply be rid of the monthly payment. The first thing anyone asks for is a settlement figure, and the number that comes back is frequently higher than people expect — but lower than adding up the remaining instalments.

What a Settlement Figure Actually Is

It is the amount required to end the agreement today. It comprises the outstanding capital plus interest accrued to the settlement date, less a rebate of interest you would have paid over the remaining term. Some agreements also include a small administration charge.

Why It Is Not the Remaining Payments Added Up

Your monthly payment covers both capital and interest. Settling early means you do not pay the future interest, so a statutory rebate applies. That is why the figure is lower than the total of what is left — and why it is higher than the bare capital.

Front-Loaded Interest Explains the Shock

Early payments are weighted towards interest and later ones towards capital. This means that halfway through a hire purchase agreement you have usually paid rather less than half the capital, which is why a settlement figure at that point looks disappointing relative to what you have already handed over.

How to Request One

Ask the lender directly, in writing or through their portal. You are generally entitled to be given the figure, and it must be provided within a defined period. Ask for it to be sent in writing rather than quoted verbally.

Figures Expire

A settlement quote is valid to a stated date, usually a few weeks, because interest continues accruing. Miss that date and the amount changes. If you are arranging a sale or a part exchange, work backwards from the expiry rather than assuming the figure holds.

Part Exchange and Negative Equity

Dealers routinely offer to settle your existing agreement as part of a new deal. If the car is worth less than the settlement figure, the shortfall does not disappear — it is added to the new agreement. This is how people end up financing two cars’ worth of debt on one vehicle, and it is common on used car finance where depreciation has been steep.

Voluntary Termination Is a Separate Right

Regulated hire purchase and conditional sale agreements carry a statutory right to end the agreement once you have paid a defined proportion of the total amount payable. You return the car and owe nothing further, subject to fair wear and tear and being up to date on payments. This is not the same as settling and it is frequently the better option.

Check Which You Actually Want

Settling means you own the car. Voluntary termination means you hand it back. People sometimes ask for a settlement figure when what they wanted was to walk away, and pay considerably more than they needed to.

Condition and Mileage on Return

Where a car is returned — under voluntary termination or at the end of a PCP — charges can apply for damage beyond fair wear and tear and for exceeding the agreed mileage. Photograph the car before handover and read the return standards in advance.

Settling With a New Loan

Borrowing elsewhere to clear car finance only makes sense if the total cost is lower. Compare the total repayable, not the monthly figure, and check for early settlement charges on the new borrowing. Your credit profile affects what is available.

Get Confirmation the Agreement Is Closed

After settling, ask for written confirmation that the agreement is terminated and the debt discharged. Check your credit file a month later to confirm it shows as settled. Agreements occasionally remain open on records long after payment, which affects future applications.

Selling a Car That Still Has Finance

You cannot pass good title while the lender still owns the vehicle, so the settlement has to be arranged as part of any sale. Buyers running a history check will see the outstanding finance, and attempting to sell without disclosing it causes the sale to collapse at best.

Settling Part Way Through a PCP

Personal contract purchase agreements include a large optional final payment, and the settlement figure part way through reflects that structure. It is frequently higher relative to what you have paid than people expect, because the capital repaid during the term is deliberately small.

Voluntary Termination Has Conditions

The right applies once you have paid the required proportion of the total amount payable, and you must be up to date. If you are short of the threshold you can pay the difference to reach it. Lenders do not always volunteer this, and some make the process deliberately awkward.

Fair Wear and Tear Is a Defined Standard

Industry guidance sets out what counts as acceptable condition for a returned vehicle. It is not a matter of opinion, and charges beyond that standard can be challenged. Ask for the inspection report and photographs supporting any charge.

Keep Everything in Writing

Settlement figures, termination notices and confirmation of closure should all be documented. Verbal assurances about what you will owe are routinely contradicted later, and the written record is what an ombudsman would look at.

Understand the Total Cost Before Signing

Whatever the product, the number that matters is the total amount repayable over the full term, including every fee. Monthly figures are designed to feel affordable and they conceal the difference between a reasonable agreement and an expensive one.

Ask for Everything in Writing

Verbal assurances about rates, charges or what happens at the end of an agreement are routinely denied later. A short email confirming what was agreed costs nothing and is the evidence if the account is ever disputed.

Where to Get Free Help

Debt advice charities and consumer services provide free, impartial guidance on credit agreements and can frequently negotiate with lenders directly. They cost nothing and are generally more effective than commercial firms charging for the same work.

Keep Every Document

The agreement, any correspondence, settlement quotes and confirmation of closure should all be kept. Disputes about consumer credit surface months or years later, and the paperwork is what resolves them quickly rather than slowly.

An Entry You Do Not Recognise

Payments to a collections company frequently appear under a name that matches nothing you signed. What Debit Finance Collections means on a bank statement covers how to identify it before assuming fraud.

Ask the lender to break it down: capital outstanding, interest, rebate applied and any fees. If the explanation does not add up or they will not provide one, complain in writing and escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service if you are not satisfied with the final response.
