Type “American Express remote jobs” into Google from a house in Manchester and you will get a page of American answers. Salaries in dollars. 401(k) matching. Medical insurance from day one. Job boards listing roles in Phoenix and Salt Lake City.

None of it tells you what you actually wanted to know, which is whether there is a job here, in Britain, that lets you work from your spare room.

There is. Amex runs one of the bigger flexible-working policies in financial services, and it applies to its UK staff too. Here is how it works, what the roles are, and the parts the American write-ups leave out.

Amex Flex, in plain terms

American Express calls its working model Amex Flex. Every job is put into one of three buckets before it is advertised, so you know what you are applying for.

Work styleWhat it means
OnsiteFour or five days a week in the office
HybridOne to three days a week in, with the team agreeing which days
VirtualHome, exclusively or nearly all of the time

The number worth holding on to: around 40% of the Amex workforce sits in that third category. Fully virtual is not a rare concession handed out to a few people. It is roughly two in five of the company.

The bit that actually matters in 2026

Most of the big banks have spent the last two years quietly walking their remote policies back. Days in the office crept from two to three, then to four. Some went to five.

As of the most recent reporting, Amex has not issued a return-to-office mandate. Amex Flex is still the policy.

That is the whole reason to pay attention to this employer if flexibility is what you are after. Not the brand, not the perks — the fact that the policy has held while comparable firms tightened theirs.

Worth saying plainly: company policy can change, and this one could. Check the wording on the vacancy itself rather than trusting an article, this one included.

Four weeks from anywhere

There is a second policy underneath the first, and it is the one people tend not to know about.

Amex staff can work up to four calendar weeks a year from somewhere other than their normal worksite. Not four weeks of holiday — four weeks of working, from a different place.

The detail that makes it unusual: it applies to onsite staff as well. Someone who is in an office five days a week still gets a month a year where the office is wherever they have taken the laptop.

What the remote jobs actually are

The virtual roles cluster in a few places.

Customer Care Professional

The most common one, and the one most people mean when they search this.

The day is card members on the phone, on chat and over email. Account queries. Billing questions. Disputed transactions. You verify who you are speaking to, work through the problem in internal systems, and move to the next one.

What they want: customer service experience, close attention to detail, and ideally a call centre behind you. It is a service job with a bank’s compliance rules wrapped around it, and it is graded accordingly.

Travel Counsellor

Amex has a travel business, and its advisor roles have long been home-based. Booking, changing and rescuing trips for card members, often the more complicated ones.

Technology

Engineering, architecture and data roles are well represented in the virtual bucket, and they sit at the top of the pay scale by a distance.

About those salary figures

You will find numbers everywhere. Indeed puts the company-wide spread between roughly $34,600 for travel counsellors and $164,600 for senior architects. ZipRecruiter advertises remote Amex roles between $31 and $117 an hour.

Every one of those is American, from American job boards, for American roles.

Do not convert them. A dollar figure divided by the exchange rate tells you nothing useful about a British offer — the market, the tax, the pension and the cost base are all different. If you want a UK number, look at UK sources for the specific role and level, or ask at interview.

What is different if you are applying from the UK

Five things the American guides will not tell you.

  1. Amex is a real UK employer, not just a US one. There is a substantial operation here, including a large site at Burgess Hill in West Sussex alongside London. Amex Flex is a global policy, so the three work styles apply to British roles too.
  2. The benefits list is not the American one. A UK contract means a UK pension, UK holiday entitlement and UK statutory leave. The 401(k) and day-one medical insurance you will read about are US arrangements. What does carry across are the global programmes — confidential counselling, 24/7 virtual GP access, backup childcare and adult care.
  3. Expect checks, and expect them to take time. This is regulated financial services. Referencing, credit checks and vetting are standard for card and payments work, and they stretch the gap between offer and start date. That is normal here, not a sign anything has gone wrong.
  4. Right to work is decided before location flexibility. A virtual role advertised in the UK is a UK role. It does not become a route to living elsewhere and working for the British entity.
  5. “Virtual” still means somewhere. Even fully virtual staff can be asked to travel to a site occasionally. If you live four hours from the nearest office, ask what “occasionally” means before you sign.

How to actually find the vacancies

A warning about every article that lists live jobs, including the ones ranking above this page: those listings are stale within weeks. Roles close, teams fill, wording changes.

Go to the American Express careers site, filter by country, and read the work style on the vacancy itself. It will say onsite, hybrid or virtual. That line is the only version of this information that is definitely current.

Two practical habits. First, save the search and let it email you, because the good virtual roles do not sit open for long. Second, read the location field carefully — a “virtual” role can still be tied to a country, a region, or a commutable distance from a named site.

Is Amex the right one to chase?

Depends what you are optimising for.

If you want a large, stable employer that has not pulled its flexible working back while everyone else did, it is a strong candidate — and the four weeks from anywhere is a genuinely uncommon benefit.

If you want to compare before committing, we have looked at the same question for Amazon and Apple, and there is a wider list in our guide to companies with remote job opportunities.

And if the real goal is a job that does not eat your evenings rather than one you can do in pyjamas, that is a different search — start with the best careers for work life balance.

Frequently asked questions

Does American Express hire fully remote workers?

Yes. Roles classed as “virtual” under Amex Flex are worked from home exclusively or almost entirely, and about 40% of the workforce sits in that category.

How many days a week is Amex hybrid?

One to three days in the office on average, with teams agreeing common days so people are in at the same time.

Has American Express ordered staff back to the office?

Not as of the most recent reporting. Amex Flex remains in place, which sets it apart from much of the sector. Check the vacancy wording, since policies do change.

Can I work abroad for American Express?

Up to four calendar weeks a year from a location other than your primary worksite, and that applies whether your role is onsite, hybrid or virtual. It is not a route to living permanently in another country.

What remote jobs does Amex have in the UK?

Customer care, travel advisory and technology roles most commonly. Amex has a significant UK presence including Burgess Hill in West Sussex and London, and Amex Flex applies to British roles as it does elsewhere.

What does an Amex Customer Care Professional do?

Handles card member queries by phone, chat and email — accounts, billing and disputes — verifying identity and working through internal systems. Customer service experience and a call centre background help.

Are the salary figures I keep seeing accurate for Britain?

No. Almost every published figure is American, drawn from US job boards for US roles. Converting them into pounds does not produce a meaningful UK number. Check UK sources for the specific role, or ask during the process.
