Who Writes Jack Reacher? Lee Child, and the Handover
Lee Child is the pen name of a TV director made redundant at 39. Since 2024 his brother has written the books. Here is exactly who wrote what.
Jack Reacher was created by Lee Child — the pen name of a British television director called James Dover Grant, who started writing after he was made redundant at 39.
But if you picked up a Reacher novel published in the last couple of years, Lee Child did not write it. His younger brother did.
That handover is the part most pages answering this question have not caught up with, so here it is properly: who wrote what, when it changed, and how a man with no book to his name talked himself onto a shelf between Raymond Chandler and Agatha Christie.
Who writes Jack Reacher now?
Lee Child announced in January 2020 that he was stepping back and handing the series to his brother, Andrew Grant, who already wrote thrillers under his own name and now publishes as Andrew Child.
It was not a clean break. They wrote together for four years first.

The redundancy that started it
James Dover Grant was born in Coventry on 29 October 1954. He went to King Edward’s School in Birmingham and read law at Sheffield.

Then he spent eighteen years in television. From 1977 to 1995 he worked at Granada in Manchester as a presentation director, on Brideshead Revisited, The Jewel in the Crown, Prime Suspect and Cracker. Across those years he was involved in putting out more than 40,000 hours of television.
In August 1994 he was told his job was going.
He started writing the following month. He was 39, about to be unemployed, and had never written a novel.
Killing Floor came out in March 1997 and won both the Anthony Award and the 1998 Barry Award for best first novel. He has started every Reacher book since on the anniversary of the day he began that one.

Where the name came from
“Lee Child” started as a family joke. The Grants used to mispronounce Renault’s Le Car as “Lee Car”, and his daughter Ruth got the nickname “lee child”.
He kept it for a colder reason. Alphabetically, Child sits between Chandler and Christie — so an unpublished writer with nothing to his name would land on the crime shelf in the best possible company.
He worked that out before he had sold a single book.
And where Reacher came from
Grant is 6ft 4in. He was shopping with his wife Jane in an Asda in Kendal when she pointed out that if the writing did not work, he was tall enough to get a job as a “reacher” — the person who fetches things off high shelves for shorter shoppers.
He liked the word and gave it to the character. One of the most recognisable names in crime fiction was chosen in a supermarket in Cumbria as a joke about being unemployed.

- Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016), Cruise again. Child plays an airport ticket agent.
- Reacher (Amazon Prime, 2022 onwards), with Alan Ritchson. Child turns up briefly at the end of season one, leaving a diner.
The casting argument writes itself. Reacher in the books is 6ft 5in and built like a door. Readers who had spent twenty years imagining him took the Amazon series rather better than the films, for reasons that have nothing to do with the acting.
The man himself
He married Jane in 1975. They have one daughter, Ruth. After Killing Floor sold he moved to New York State in 1998 — and in 2025, after twenty-seven years, he moved back to the UK.
He is a lifelong Aston Villa supporter and has smuggled players into the books; the Villa defender Shaun Teale became “Grover Teale” in Killing Floor. In 2009 he funded 52 Jack Reacher scholarships at Sheffield, and in 2012 he gave £10,000 to Brecon Mountain Rescue.
He has never been precious about what he writes, describing novels as the purest form of entertainment — and he chose deliberately to write American thrillers despite being thoroughly English.
